DREAM ON: I NEVER PROMISED YOU CHAROSES, MARTIN (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a publishing company employee named Martin Tupper whose thoughts become animated through black-and-white clips of old television shows. In this episode, Martin finds a Holy Bible in Jeremy's pants drawer. He questions Judith on how Jeremy became a Christian without giving any thought to the Tupper family's Judaism. The final straw occurs when Jeremy holds a loud bible study at Martin's apartment. Martin wants to educate Jeremy about his Jewish heritage, but Jeremy finds the religion "inconsistent." Martin takes Jeremy to Rabbi Hirschberg, hoping to make Jeremy become a Jew, but Martin finds that the rabbi doesn't push his son enough. The rabbi thinks Martin should set an example for Jeremy, such as attending temple on a regular basis. Thus, Martin decides to have a Passover seder for the entire family. However, Judith is having Easter dinner on the same Sunday, and Jeremy is now forced to choose between religions and parents. While Martin and Eddie prepare matzah balls and charoset, among other things, Judith makes Easter bunny cookies. Struggling, Martin eventually gets the seder catered. Not wanting to choose between parents, Jeremy convinces his parents to have a joint Easter/Passover dinner. At the meal, cultures collide, especially when Aunt Sadie arrives with gefilte fish. Soon, Judith is claiming that Martin is intentionally trying to make the meal as Jewish as possible, while Martin notices that his ex-wife is serving ham. Things get even worse when the Jewish and Christian contingents square off and sing their own ceremonial songs. At last, Jeremy can take it no more, thinking his parents hypocrites and deciding that he would rather have no religion. After making up, Judith and Martin decide that they should become religious, but both are unable to resist more exciting temptations.
