Summary
Tape one of two. One in this series on the performing arts. In this program -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- tenor Luciano Pavarotti performs with the New York City Opera Orchestra, conducted by Julius Rudel. Pavarotti is joined by several other singers: sopranos Renee Fleming, Cheryl Studer, and Ruth Ann Swenson; mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick; tenor Marcello Giordani; baritones Haijing Fu and Lucio Gallo; and basses Paul Plishka and Andrea Silvestrelli. Host Hugh Downs introduces the program, which begins with the overture to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Le Nozze di Figaro." Next, Pavarotti sings "Un'aura amorosa" from Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutte." Giodani and Fu sing the Act I duet from Georges Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers." Pavarotti and Swenson perform the duet from Act I of Gaetano Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore." Fleming and Giodani sing the duet from Act III of Vincenzo Bellini's "I Puritani." Next, Gallo and Pavarotti sing "Venti scudi," another duet from "L'elisir d'amore." Swenson and Plishka sing the duet from Act III of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale." Zajick and Pavarotti sing the duet from Act IV of Giuseppe Verdi's "Il Trovatore." Giodani and Plishka sing the duet from Act I of Charles Gounod's "Faust." Studer and Pavarotti sing the duet from Act I of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor." During intermission there is a prerecorded interview between Downs and Pavarotti. Pavarotti talks about styles of singing from different places in the body, why singing opera is like "screaming with control," regions where opera singers come from and why, and a performance of his that Downs remembers from the late 1970s.
