
KENNEDY CENTER TONIGHT: EUBIE BLAKE: A CENTURY OF MUSIC (TV)
Summary
One in this series of performing arts programs. A broadcast of the one hundredth birthday celebration concert for ragtime pioneer and composer Eubie Blake. After an opening dance number from the Grover Dale Dancers and birthday salutations from the evening's performers, host Billy Dee Williams introduces the event. Anita Morris sings "It's All Your Fault," after which Lee Roy Reams sings "Lovin' Chile." Lola Falana sings "I'm Just Simply Full of Jazz." Next, Gregg Burge tap dances, singing "I Wonder Where My Sweetie Can Be?" Eddie Mekka and Reams sing "See America First." Next is a series of songs from Blake's 1921 musical "Shuffle Along." After "Shuffle Along" is performed, Lola Falana sings "If You've Never Been Vamped by a Brownskin, You've Never Been Vamped at All." Mekka sings "In Honeysuckle Time," then he and Terry Burrell sing "Love Will Find a Way." Morris sings "I'm Craving That Kind of Love." Falana and Burrell join her for "I'm Just Wild about Harry." Burge sings "Tan Manhattan." Next is a series of solo performances. Phyllis Hyman sings "Hit the Road" and "Daddy." Joe Williams sings "Low Down Blues" and "Dollar for a Dime." Patti LaBelle sings "My Handy Man Ain't Handy No More." Lee Roy Reams tap dances and sings "Hot Feet." Rosemary Clooney sings Blake's signature song, "Memories of You." LaBelle sings "Roll, Jordan." Cab Calloway sings "You Got to Git the Gittin' While the Gittin's Good." In a prerecorded segment, Stevie Wonder sings "Goodnight Angeline" accompanied by one of Blake's piano rolls. Lastly, the Maryland State University Choir sings Blake's most recent song, "Well Worth the While."
