
PREMIO LO NUESTRO A LA MUSICA LATINA 1998 {'LO NUESTRO' LATIN MUSIC AWARDS} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
The tenth edition (1998) of this yearly music awards presentation program which honors Latin music achievements in the United States. This year's program, broadcast live from the James L. Knight Convention Center in Miami, gives awards in the categories of Pop/Ballad, Tropical/Salsa, and Regional Mexican as well as an award for best music video and an excellence award that recognizes outstanding contributions to Latin music over the years. This year also includes the premiere of the "young artist with legacy" award which recognizes a young artist in the prime of a successful career. Spanish television comic Julio Sabala returns for the second year as host of the program, and he is joined by Daniela Romo who serves as his co-host. The program opens with a pre-recorded segment which features host and celebrity impersonator Sabala dressed as various Latin recording artists and a medley of clips from the show's past ten years. Co-host Romo summarizes the past year's news, then introduces television talk show host Cristina Saralegui and Julio Sabala, who present the evening's first award for best album, Pop/Ballad, to Alejandro Fernández for "Me estoy enamorando." Presentations and performances in this segment include the following: Grupo Límite performs "Hasta mañana"; Paty Navidad and Veronica Macias present the award for best new artist, Tropical/Salsa, to Chichi Peralta + Son Familia; hosts Sabala and Romo thank the television viewers and artists that make these awards possible, and mention that the results are certified by the accounting firm Arthur Anderson; Fernando Carrillo and Ernesto LaGuardia present the award for best female artist, Regional Mexican, to Ana Bárbara (not present); María Antonieta Duque and Ernesto Cortez from the television show "Bienvenidos" present the award for best band or duo, Pop/Ballad, to Juan Gabriel and Rocío Dúrcal; the hosts of Univisión's "Despierta América," Ana María Canseco, Giselle Blondet, Fernando Arau, and Rafael Jose, present the first five nominees for best music video, along with a comic video by Arau and Jose; Cristian Castro performs (song unidentified); the band Ilegales presents the award for best band or duo, Regional Mexican, to Grupo Límite; former Miss Venezuela Daniela Kosán, Ms. Universe runner-up Verushka Ramirez, and Raymond Arrieta (of the program "Lente Loco") present the award for best band or duo, Tropical/Salsa, to Ilegales; television stars Kate del Castillo and Odalys García (of "Lente Loco") present the award for best male artist, Regional Mexican, to Alejandro Fernández; Carlos Ponce, Nydia Rojas, and Bobby Pulido present the award for best new artist, Pop/Ballad, to Jordi; and Jailene performs "Aqui Estoy."
Frankie Negrón and Alquímia present the award for best new artist, Regional Mexican, to Priscila y sus Balas de Plata; Sonia Smith and Jorge Reyes present the award for best female artist, Tropical/Salsa, to Olga Tañón; Jose Luís Rodriguez (El Puma) presents a video tribute to the award for excellence honoree Trio Los Panchos, and presents the award to the creator of the group, Don Alfredo Gil, who accepts via live video feed from Mexico City; Rodriguez then interprets one of the group's songs (title not given); Raul de Molina (El Gordo) and Lili Estefan present the award for best album, Tropical/Salsa, to Charlie Zaa for his "Sentimientos"; Cesar Borja, ChiChi Peralta, and Michael Stuart -- all nominees for best new artist -- present the last five nominees for best music video; Marco Antonio Solís and Laura Flores present the award for best song, Tropical/Salsa, to "Y hubo alguien" by Marc Anthony, composed by Omar Alfanno, and produced by Angel "Cucco" Peña and Marc Anthony; Charlie Zaa and co-host Daniela Romo present the award for best male artist, Pop/Ballad, to Alejandro Fernández; Alejandro Sanz performs "Corazon partido"; Olga Tañón presents the award for best album, Regional Mexican, to "Juntos otra vez" by Juan Gabriel and Rocío Dúrcal (not present); Don Francisco presents the award for "young artist with legacy" to Lucero for her 18-year career in television, film, and music; Lucero then performs "Corazón lastimado" with a mariachi band; and Paty Manterola and Agustín Pantoja present the award for best male artist, Tropical/Salsa, to Charlie Zaa.
Los Tigres del Norte perform (song unidentified); television stars Javier Romero and Hector Soberon present the award for best song, Regional Mexican, to "La venia bendita" by Marco Antonio Solís, who also composed and produced the song; Sofía Vergara and Fernando Fiori present the award for best music video to "Ella y El" by Ricardo Arjona (not present) and directed by Alejandro González, who accepts the award; Marc Anthony and Jordi present the award for best female artist, Pop/Ballad, to Thalia (not present); Alejandro Fernández performs (song unidentified); Don Francisco and Laura Zapata (from the show "Sábado Gigante") present the award for best song, Pop/Ballad, to "Si tu supieras" by Alejandro Fernández, composed by Kike Santander, and produced by Emilio Estefan, Jr. and Kike Santander; Fernández and Santander accept the award onstage, and Estefan gives his thanks via video feed. The program ends with co-hosts Julio Sabala and Daniela Romo thanking Univisión and all the people that work behind the scenes to make the show possible. Commercials deleted.
