GREAT PERFORMANCES: LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: JAMES GALWAY PLAYS MOSTLY MOZART WITH THE MOSTLY MOZART FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA (TV)

Summary

One in this series on the performing arts. In this program -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- conductor and flutist, James Galway, performs with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra. As the program begins, host Joanna Simon greets the viewing audience backstage at Avery Fisher Hall. The performance begins with Galway and the Orchestra performing Act III, "Entrance of the Queen of Sheba" from "Solomon." Galway then plays Mozart's Andante in C major, which is followed by Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major. During the intermission, Simon sits down to speak with Galway and they discuss the following topics: the difficulties in conducting and playing the flute during a performance, and as a result, the importance of rehearsals as an opportunity to communicate with the orchestra; why Galway chose to perform at the festival; his six gold flutes and why he prefers them to silver; Elton John's composition for Galway; and Galway's master classes he will teach in Seattle during the summer. Galway leaves Simon to rest before taking the stage again and Gerard Schwarz joins Simon backstage. As the musical director to the festival, Schwarz talks about why Mozart as a composer was chosen to be honored with a festival each year. Schwarz talks about how he programs a festival and what guides his choices. Simon also asks Schwarz about the differences in performances during the days of Mozart and today, and the two talk about the current high standards of performance. Next the two discuss how Schwarz, also a musician and a conductor, communicates with an orchestra. After the intermission, Galway conducts and performs Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons." The audience applauds and Galway retreats off-stage and returns for two encores, performing Bach's Polonaise & Badinerie from Orchestra Suite No. 2 in B minor and Overton's "Loch Mozart." As the program comes to a close, and to the audience's delight, Galway performs the Irish "Londonderry Air" ("Danny Boy").
