Summary
This documentary is about Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, the famous mounted bullfighter. This portrait of Hermoso de Mendoza captures the bullfighter on his farm at Estella-Navarra and then accompanies him to Seville, filming his triumph at the 2001 April festival there. Additional commentary is provided throughout by Canal+ bullfighting critic Manuel MolŽs, ex-rejoneador (mounted bullfighter) Manuel VidriŽ, and the famous Portuguese rejoneador Joao Moura. MolŽs, VidriŽ, and Moura open the documentary by discussing what makes Hermoso de Mendoza extraordinary and how his bullfighting has elevated the whole genre of bullfighting on horseback. Hermoso de Mendoza talks about how his passion for mounted bullfighting was ignited when he saw Moura and VidriŽ in a televised bullfight when he was fifteen. The camera documents Hermoso de Mendoza's training methods as he describes his philosophy; particular attention is paid to his two most famous horses, Cagancho and Chicuelo, and how he dealt with their distinct personalities. Next, the program follows Hermoso de Mendoza and his team to the April festival in Seville. Intimate shots of the bullfighter as he dresses for the fight at the hotel are interspersed with the preparations at the bullring, Real Maestranza de Sevilla. Footage of Hermoso de Mendoza's brilliant bullfighting, which earned him two ears and passage through the main door for the third year in a row at Real Maestranza, accompanies his poetic explanation of his views of the bull as more "collaborator" than "enemy" in creating the beautiful "tragedy." The documentary closes with MolŽs, VidriŽ, and Moura commenting on Hermoso de Mendoza's high position among all bullfighters. (This program is in Spanish.)
