MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY
TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2004: TRADING SPACES {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's annual William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors TLC's hit home remodeling program "Trading Spaces." Museum television curator David Bushman moderates a panel discussion which includes executive producer Tom Ferrell (Banyan Productions), Banyan Productions chairman/partner Susan Cohen-Dickler, executive producer Kathy Davidov, and the following cast members: carpenter Carter Oosterhouse; interior designers Hildi Santo Tomas and Doug Wilson; and host Paige Davis. Davis introduces the episode "Tampa: Amelia Avenue," which is screened in its entirety. Bushman then leads a panel discussion covering the following topics: the importance of casting to the program's success; the casting experience from the producers' points of view; the casting experience from the cast members' points of view; how the various designer/carpenter cast combinations make each episode unique; challenges for designers on the program; new elements in the special "Trading Spaces: Home Free" series; and the relationships between the cast members. Bushman then invites questions from the audience which lead to the discussion of the following topics: the time frame within which the show is produced; the size and makeup of the on-site production team and the post-production team; how cast members' off-program projects affect the program; on-site modifications to designers' design plans; Davis's role in the projects; homeowners' reactions to the transformations of their rooms; program designers cast members would choose to transform their own homes; the difference between the designers' work on- and off-show; and dealing with difficult homeowners.

(This tape includes the "Trading Spaces" episode "Tampa: Amelia Avenue," which is part of the Museum's collection and may be viewed separately. See "Trading Spaces: Tampa: Amelia Avenue" (T:80462) for summary.)
