JEAN MOULIN: UNE AFFAIRE FRANCAISE {JEAN MOULIN: A
HERO'S DESTINY} {PT. 2 OF 2} {FRENCH WITH ENGLISH
SUBTITLES} {2003 INTERNATIONAL EMMY NOMINEE} (TV)
Summary
Part two of this two-part miniseries that recreates the
final years of Jean Moulin, the French civil servant who
became a resistance leader in Nazi-occupied France
during World War II. Part two begins in January 1943
with Moulin's meeting in London with General Charles de
Gaulle during which Moulin is chosen to represent de
Gaulle on the Resistance Council, the underground group
composed of leaders of different factions of resistance
movements within France. Through the first months of
1943, Moulin's dictatorial governance of the body breeds
resentment among his fellow councilors, some of whom
are determined to replace de Gaulle as de facto leader
of Republican France-in-exile. Moulin's unwavering
dedication to the cause also alienates Alice, a young
operative under his care, who would rather fight than
follow Moulin's mandates, and Gilberte, his Jewish lover
and sometime spy, who resents Moulin's willingness to
sacrifice their love and lives for France. In the
meantime, Nazi officer Klaus Barbie is hot on Moulin's
trail. By April 1943, Moulin's detractors begin to
ignore his stringent dictates, compromising the
movement's security out of resentment; in May 1943,
this results in the infiltration of the Resistance
Council by an operative-turned-informant who sets a
trap for the Council leaders in exchange for his life.
In June 1943, Moulin and his colleagues are arrested by
the Nazis and tortured. Although Barbie's torture of
Resistance leader Moulin is particularly brutal, he is
ultimately unable to extract secrets from Moulin, who
dies en route to Berlin. In closing, the film
underlines the heroism of Moulin's sacrifice with actual
archival footage of Allied D-Day operations and
celebrations throughout France after her liberation from
the Nazis, including images of General de Gaulle
marching with Resistance fighters through Paris.
