GREAT PERFORMANCES: LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: PAVAROTTI PLUS! (TV)

Summary

Tape one of two. One in this series on the performing arts. In this installment -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti is joined by eight of a new generation of American singers (Susan Dunn, Jerry Hadley, Mary Jane Johnson, James Morris, Cheryl Parrish, Alan Titus, Carol Vaness and Delores Ziegler), and accompanied by the New York City Opera Orchestra under the direction of conductor Emerson Buckley, for a concert of opera classics. The first half of the concert features the following performances: the orchestra plays the Overture from Guiseppe Verdi's "Luisa Miller"; Pavarotti performs "Cielo e mar from Amilcare Ponchielli's "La Gioconda"; Johnson, Ziegler, Pavarotti, Titus, Morris, and Hadley sing the sextet from Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia"; Titus and Morris perform a duet from Vincenzo Bellini's "Puritani"; Vaness and Pavarotti perform a duet from Donizetti's "Lucia"; Pavarotti and Morris perform a duet from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Don Giovanni"; and Pavarotti sings "La Donna e mobile" from Verdi's "Rigoletto" and is joined by Vaness, Ziegler, and Titus for that opera's quartet. During intermission, Patrick Watson presents a three-part, pre-taped film about the life of opera singers. The film features commentary from Titus, Vaness, Morris, Pavarotti's manager Herbert H. Breslin, The Metropolitan Opera House's music director and principal conductor James Levine, Robert Jacobson (editor of "Opera News"), Pavarotti, and Hadley. The tape ends with Watson's comments on the conductor Buckley and his introduction to the first piece of the second half of the evening's program. Continues with T:80330.002.
