PAULA ZAHN NOW {COLIN POWELL INTERVIEW} (TV)
Summary
The first of three segments on this tape which presents
various clips of reporter/anchor Paula Zahn's work. The
first segment is a nearly complete episode of "Paula
Zahn Now," a prime-time news program, hosted by Zahn,
which features live newsmaker interviews and analysis
of current events. This edition, which begins a few
minutes into the broadcast, presents part one of Zahn's
exclusive interview with Secretary of State Colin
Powell. Zahn asks Powell about the current unrest in
Haiti and whether President Jean-Bertrand Aristide will
step down. She also has questions about the war in Iraq,
including whether the U.S. will meet the June 30, 2004
deadline for transfer of power to the Iraqis and whether
the war has been worth the human cost (over 500 dead,
at the time of the interview) and diplomatic cost.
Additional stories include the following: Zahn talks
with Republican strategist Ed Rollins and CNN
contributor/TIME columnist Joe Klein about her
interview with Powell and about the upcoming debate
among Democratic candidates, the last before Super
Tuesday; nearly five years after the massacre at
Columbine High School, Zahn interviews Darrell Scott,
father of a Columbine victim, and Randy and Judy Brown,
the parents of Brooks Brown, who was threatened by
killer Eric Harris, and asks for comments about a report
released by Colorado officials claiming that the police
had at least 15 contacts with the killers before the
massacre; John Vause reports from Jerusalem on how the
Israelis have used intelligence in the war against
terrorism and to thwart planned attacks (includes
interviews with Israeli army spokesperson Major Sharon
Feingold, former intelligence officer Efran Lerman, and
Palestinian legal adviser Michael Tarz); brief coverage
of Rosie O'Donnell's marriage in San Francisco to
partner Kelly Carpenter and O'Donnell's condemnation of
President George W. Bush's support of the constitutional
amendment banning same-sex marriages; CNN
correspondent Keith Oppenheim reports live from Harry
Carey's Restaurant in Chicago on the destruction of the
infamous foul ball that may have cost the Chicago Cubs a
trip to the World Series during the 1993 playoffs; Zahn
moderates a debate between Janet Parshall of WAVA
Radio in Washington, D.C., and Nancy Skinner, host of
the syndicated "Good Day USA" about the recent
suspension of shock jock Howard Stern in six cities by
Clear Channel after a graphic on-air discussion about
Paris Hilton and sex (includes a clip from Rush Limbaugh
commenting on Stern's suspension); Zahn, as part of an
ongoing series entitled "The Real Story Behind The
Oscar," reports on the controversy surrounding the film
"Monster," which garnered actress Charlize Theron an
Oscar for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos,
and which relatives of victims claim paints too
sympathetic a picture of the killer (includes interviews
with documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield, who has
filmed two documentaries on Wuornos; Florida state
attorney John Tanner, who prosecuted the case against
Wuornos; and Letha Prater, whose brother was Wuornos's
fourth victim); Zahn checks in with CNN senior political
analyst Jeff Greenfield and "Crossfire" co-host Paul
Begala for a preview of the night's final Democratic
debate before Super Tuesday, including a discussion of
what Senator John Edwards has to do to rise above
presumptive Democratic nominee Senator John Kerry; and
Gerri Willis of CNN Financial News briefly reports on
the failed merger bid between AMC Theatres and Loews
Theatres, one that would have challenged the dominance
of Regal Entertainment, the largest theater owner in the
United States. Includes commercials.
