TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {SLIM PICKENS, TELLY SAVALAS, DR. JOYCE BROTHERS, FLORENCE HENDERSON} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the guests include actor Telly Savalas, actress/performer Florence Henderson, actor Slim Pickens, and advice expert Dr. Joyce Brothers. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: his problems with the previous night's audience; why Doc Severinsen is not conducting the orchestra; what's on the other television networks at the current time; the recent snowfall in San Francisco; the ongoing Winter Olympics; the latest on the political scene, told as a soap opera: "The Days That Ruined Our Lives"; and announcer Ed McMahon's "hitman" outfit. In the next segment, McMahon and Carson discuss their weekend plans before Carson reads an actual list of "Rules for Teachers" from 1872, as well as some proposed rules for 1976. Carson's first guest, Savalas, joins him to touch on such topics as: his slick duds; his television show, "Kojak"; his racehorse, Telly's Pop; his horse being a gelding; what an owner does after he wins a horse race; his parents and his brothers; why he doesn't want to be stereotyped as "Kojak"; his youthful dreams of being a psychiatrist; his recent trip to England where he met Queen Elizabeth; and his famous expression "Who loves ya', baby?" Next, Henderson performs "My Own Best Friend." Then, Henderson, joins Carson to touch on such topics as: men wearing jewelry; whether she will ever get a tattoo; her upcoming television movie, in which she'll play "a bitch" for the first time in her career; actors that have played her husband on screen; the place that Jose Ferrer once had to hide a battery pack for his portable microphone; and whether Carson wears baggy pants. Then, Henderson and four backup singers do a number from her Las Vegas act -- a medley of "Keep on Singing" and "Love Will Keep Us Together." Carson's third guest, Pickens, joins him to touch on such topics as: his beaver-skin cowboy hat; his work in rodeo; the number of bones he's broken; getting a dent on the back of his head from a bucking bronco -- which led to being diagnosed with a fractured skull; and some gruesome rodeo pictures. Then, Pickens shows Carson how to "rope a horse." Finally, Brothers joins Carson to touch on such topics as: her newest book; why everything gets better as one ages; how Valentine's Day came to exist; how love can make someone taller; what spurs sexual attraction; what flying dreams mean; and dreaming in color versus black-and-white. Also, McMahon does an in-studio commercial for Beef Brown 'N Serve sausage and Carson does one for Pillsbury Figurines diet bars and Heinz ketchup. Includes commercials.
