PATH TO 9-11, THE {PART 2 OF 2} / PRIMETIME: 9/11/06: WHERE THINGS STAND (TV)
Summary
Tape two of two. Part two in this two-part miniseries, a dramatization of events leading up to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, based on sources which include the 9/11 Commission report and containing fictionalized scenes and composite characters. This part begins with both of the twin towers burning. Vice President Dick Cheney meets with Rice, wondering if any one has heard from Bush. Clarke talks with Cheney, who discusses the Al-Qaeda implications. Then, word comes in that American 77 has been hijacked and is headed for Washington. Cheney is then evacuated. Jane Garvey, FAA administrator, updates Clarke on the hijacked planes, as all planes in New York and Washington have been grounded. Meanwhile, ground control loses communication with United 93. Then, in San Ramon, California, Deena Burnett is called by her husband Tom, who is on United 93. He urges her to call the authorities and tell them what has happened. Ground control still can't communicate with United 93 Clarke authorizes the Air Force to shoot down the hijacked planes but he needs presidential permission first. Tom tells Deena that the hijackers are in the cockpit. Then, American 77 crashes into the Pentagon. The Northeast Air Defense Sector in upstate New York prepares its fighter jets to establish air patrol over Manhattan. Then, officials are told that Bush has given a "shoot-down" order. Meanwhile, FDNY firefighters continue making rescue attempts at the World Trade Center as people begin jumping out of the towers. O'Neill walks through the wreckage looking for survivors as the first tower collapses, killing him. At 9:59 a.m., John Miller tries to call O'Neill, but only gets his recorded message. Then, Tom tells Deena that a group has decided to go after the hijackers and take them out, which the passengers successfully pull off, causing the plane to plummet in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m. Graphics reveal the damage and outcome of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Commercials deleted. After the program, ABC presents "Primetime: 9/11/06: Where Things Stand," hosted by Charles Gibson. Gibson explains that the program will look at how America has changed in the five years since the terrorist attacks. Brian Ross, chief investigative correspondent, reports on where Bid Ladin may be hiding and, according to Robert Grenier, retired head of the CIA Counterterrrorism Center, what he may be planning. Ross also discusses the hunt for Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri. Afterward, reporter Pierre Thomas visits the "nerve center of the nation's war on terror," the National Counterterrorism Center to see what measures have been made to protect the country since September 11, 2001. Thomas also interviews Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and FBI Director Robert Mueller. Finally, he talks with Senator Charles Grassley, who believes that not enough has been done to prevent another terrorist attack. Then, Gibson is joined by John Miller, now an FBI spokesman, and Richard Clarke, now an ABC consultant, who discuss whether America has been simply lucky in not having been attacked in the five years since September 11. Next, Ross reports on an undercover investigation he made with a team of reporters to see if he could easily get the necessary supplies to make an ammonium nitrate bomb. Ross gets comments from Sen. John McCain, Rep. Edward Markey, and Andrew Howell, vice president of Homeland Security Policy, to find out why more is not being done to put stricter controls on potentially dangerous materials. Finally, Gibson offers some closing thoughts on the lasting impact of Sept. 11, 2001. Includes commercials.
