Summary

One in this series of current events documentary programs, hosted by Edward R. Murrow. This program which profiles Anna Mary Robertson Moses ("Grandma Moses") and Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Murrow interviews Grandma Moses at her Eagle Bridge, New York home on the following topics: subjects she avoids painting (e.g., the Bible), her painting of "The Battle of Bennington," her first painting, a geography lesson in song, her painting of the Shenandoah Valley, her opinion of Churchill's and Eisenhowers' paintings, her visit with President Truman in Washington, her memory of Lincoln's death in 1865, television, her painting of Halloween, and her views on the future. Next, Murrow reports on Armstrong's European tour with his band; on a plane, the band plays "Sleepy Time Down South"; in Switzerland, Satchmo is greeted by an oompah band and he plays "When the Saints Go Marching In"; Armstrong in concert, including Paris where he plays "C'est Si Bon"; at a left bank nightclub after hours, Satchmo joins a jam session and plays "Struttin' With Some Barbeque"; at 6:00 am, Murrow interviews Satchmo, who talks about jazz as an international language, touring Russia, his successful 1953 tour of Berlin, King Oliver, and jazz terms like "Gut Bucket," and "Cat"; in Zurich and Lyon, an audience reacts to the "Twelfth Street Rag." The segment concludes with the band playing on the train to their next destination. This is a black-and-white copy of a program partially broadcast in color. Includes commercials.
