CBS REPORTS: THE HOMOSEXUALS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of irregularly scheduled in-depth reports.

This program examines the personal, social, political, and religious aspects of male homosexuality in America. Throughout this program, Mike Wallace interviews unidentified gay men about their experiences and attitudes toward their sexual orientation. Highlights of this program include interviews with the following people: gay nursing home administrator Lars Larsen; gay school registrar Warren Atkins of Washington D.C.; Dr. Charles Socarides, psychoanalyst at the Albert Einstein Medical School, on the theory that homosexuality is a mental illness; inspector James Fisk of the Los Angeles Police Department on legal problems; Hal Cole of the Mattachine Society, America's first organization of homosexuals; and various clergymen on the need for compassion. Also included are comments by citizens of Boise, Idaho, following a "homosexual witch-hunt" that disrupted the community; remarks by Secretary of State Dean Rusk on the ineligibility of gays for employment in the State Department; and excerpts of interviews with social critic Albert Goldman and author Gore Vidal, who express contrasting views on the nature of homosexuality.
