SHAKESPEARE PLAYS, THE: HENRY VIII (TV)

Summary

One in this series of BBC productions of the plays of William Shakespeare. In Act I of "Henry VIII," the Duke of Buckingham is arrested for treason, falsely accused by Cardinal Wolsey who desires to stop Buckingham from telling King Henry about Wolsey's ambitious schemes. King Henry meets Anne Bullen during a dancing party at Wolsey's London home. In Act II, Buckingham is condemned to death at his trial. A divorce hearing is held because of Henry's attraction to Anne and the fact that his Queen Katharine has yet to provide a male heir. In Act III, Henry demands Wolsey's dismissal because of Wolsey's efforts to prevent a marriage with Anne and the discovery of other intrigues. Cromwell informs Wolsey of Henry's secret marriage to Anne, and the appointment of Sir Thomas More and Cranmer to the positions of Lord Chancellor and Archbishop of Canterbury. Later, Anne is coronated; Katharine and Wolsey die of illness; and Anne gives birth to a daughter, Elizabeth.
