MASTERPIECE THEATRE: CAKES AND ALE {EPISODE 3} (TV)

Summary

Part three of this three-part dramatization of the novel by W. Somerset Maugham about a promiscuous English barmaid named Rosie Gann and the men in her life. In this portion, Willie Ashenden recalls how Rosie left Edward Driffield to go to America with her longtime lover, George Kemp, and how Driffield met the second Mrs. Driffield. The program concludes as Ashenden journeys to New York, where his play is being produced on Broadway. While in New York, he tracks down Rosie and tries to convince her to return to England so that he can write her side of the Driffield biography. Rosie refuses, but tells Ashenden the secret reason that she left Driffield to come to America with George Kemp. (This copy of this program does not include commentary by Alistair Cooke.)
