CLASSIC THEATRE: THE HUMANITIES IN DRAMA: SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER; OR, THE MISTAKES OF A NIGHT (TV)
Summary
A classic 1773 comedy of deception and mistaken identity. Marlow and Hastings arrive near the home of Kate Hardcastle, Marlow's never-seen betrothed. They meet Tony Lumpkin, who tells them that the Hardcastle home is an inn. When greeted courteously by Mr. Hardcastle, the 2 men treat him as an innkeeper. Marlow, nervous with well-bred women, meets Kate and is shy. Kate disguises herself as a barmaid and finds that Marlow is aggressive with lower-class women. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hardcastle learns that Constance and Hastings plan to elope, thus thwarting her plans of marrying constance to Tony Lumpkin, her son by a first marriage she sends Constance away. Tony ruins his mother's plan by leading Constance's carriage in a circle. Marlow, not realizing that Kate and the barmaid are the same, tells Mr. Hardcastle he does note love Kate. Marlow then tells the barmaid of his love while Hardcastle eavesdrops. The errors of the night are revealed, and the two couples united.
