CBS SALUTES LUCY: THE FIRST 25 YEARS (TV)

Summary

William S. Paley, chairman of the board of CBS, introduces this special honoring Lucille Ball. Highlights of this program include the following: clips of Lucille Ball from the various series she appeared on in which Lucy attempts to play the cello; mimics Ricky's accent; gets tipsy on "Vitameata Vegamin"; breaks the news of her pregnancy to Ricky; interferes with John Wayne as he attempts to make a movie; plays the "Queen of the Gypsies"; works with Ethel at a chocolate factory ("Job Switching"); attempts, with Ethel's help, to fix a shower; experiences difficulties when she goes out for Japanese food with Danny Kaye; learns how to stomp grapes for making wine; imitates Marlene Dietrich; takes Jack Benny through a new security system designed to protect his money; introduces Milton Berle, who is dressed as a woman, to Ricky and Fred; attempts to eat spaghetti at the Brown Derby as William Holden stares at her; is sung to by Dean Martin; mistakes Richard Burton for a plumber; and makes a disaster of a musical number with Danny Thomas. Other highlights include: Desi Arnaz describes his amazement at Lucy's talent; Dick Van Dyke demonstrates his pantomimetic ability and presenting clips of Lucille Ball doing the same as she imitates Charlie Chaplin and performs with Harpo Marx; Vivian Vance reminisces about her start on the "I Love Lucy" show; Carol Burnett remembers the first time she met Ball and introduces a clip of the two of them on her first special; Danny Kaye analyzes Ball's universal appeal; Gale Gordon discusses the two series he worked on with Lucy and introduces a montage of clips of him getting doused; Gordon pays tribute to William Frawley, which is followed by a clip of Frawley with Vance singing "Carolina in the Morning" on "I Love Lucy"; Sammy Davis Jr. introduces a series of clips of Lucille Ball singing and dancing with various stars including John Bubbles, Ken Berry, Red Skelton, Eddie Albert, Dan Dailey, Carol Burnett, George Burns, Patti Andrews, Lucy Arnaz, Wayne Newton and Desi Arnaz, Jr.; Milton Berle sings "Thanks for the Memories" and introduces a clip in which Lucy harasses him at a softball game; Johnny Carson introduces a clip in which Lucille Ball appears on "The Tonight Show" and attempts to stump the band; James Stewart presents Ball with an award honoring her for her twenty-five years of achievement in television; and Lucille Ball thanks all of the people who have been a part of her television career. Commercials deleted.
