SCTV NETWORK 90 {MORAL MAJORITY SHOW} (TV)
Summary
One in this satirical late-night comedy series, featuring members of the Second City comedy troupe, which parodies television programming and pop culture. This program features a recurring sketch with SCTV's largest "sponsor," Sunbright Detergents, pressuring SCTV President Guy Caballero to change programming to appease the Moral Majority and to plug Sunbright products as often as possible. Sketch highlights include the following: Andrea Martin plays a musclebound new mother in a promo for "Post-Natal Exercises"; Eugene Levy struts robotically through a supermarket in a commercial for "PoocharŽ" dog food; a parody combining elements of "The Merv Griffin Show" and "The Andy Griffith Show"; "Critic's Corner" with Bill Needle; on "Mrs. Falbo's Tiny Town," the hostess spies the king and queen fornicating dorsally; the editor of the "National Midnight Star" defends the publication against charges of calumny; "The Brooke Shields Show" welcomes Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill and actor Kirk Douglas; a promo for "Indira," a musical based on the life of Indira Gandhi; Lin Ye-Tang introduces "Doorway to Hell" -- and promptly gives away the ending; a promo for an upcoming "Rock Concert" in which the pyromaniacal hosts blow up Freddy Fender, Randy Newman, Patti Smith, the Village People, and Helen Reddy; Count Floyd introduces "Dr. Tongue's 3-D House of Stewardesses and extols the virtues of "those good-looking 1950 babes"; on "The Great White North," the beer-swilling hosts voice their gripes; the "Guy with a Snake on His Face" pitches Harry's Discount Sex Shop; Floyd Robertson speaks on behalf of Rolling Hills Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center; on the "SCTV News," the anchormen report the top stories in between snide jabs at each other; the "Jerry Todd Show" features "fine video" from laconic hipster Tom Monroe, a commercial for Crazy Hy's, and Joe Flaherty as Bing Crosby joining Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young for a song combining elements of "White Christmas" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." Finally, the "Doobie Brothers" plug a carpet store and ubiquitous guest vocalist "Michael McDonald" races to add his contributions to a Christopher Cross recording. Commercials deleted.
