WILLIAM FAULKNER'S MISSISSIPPI (TV)

Summary

This documentary, narrated by Zachary Scott, attempts to evoke the world of writer William Faulkner. Actor Montgomery Clift recites passages from Faulkner's work, which vividly reflect his love/hate relationship with his native South, the subject of so much of his work. Filmed on location in Faulkner's hometown of Oxford, Mississippi, and the surrounding Lafayette County, the documentary blends narration with footage that depicts rural areas of the South fictionalized by Faulkner, comparing the imaginary Yoknapatawpha County -- so memorably mythologized in his books -- with places where he actually lived. Among the topics addressed are Faulkner's childhood, the beginning of his career as a writer, and racial tension in the South. Additional documentary footage shows Mississippians in their day-to-day activities and at work, and sharing their views on issues raised about the South in the film.
