NET FESTIVAL: CINDERELLA {NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA}; THE STORY OF CINDERELLA {CREATED WITH CHILDREN'S DRAWINGS} (TV)
Summary
This special presentation features the National Ballet of Canada performing Serge Prokofiev's "Cinderella," choreographed by the company's artistic director, Celica Franca. As the story begins, Cinderella works as a slave in her own home. She is treated poorly by her stepsisters and stepmother, who have recently received an invitation to a ball. In preparation for their night out, the stepsisters and their mother try on wigs, dresses, and jewelry. Watching them, Cinderella longs to be part of the event, but in the end she is left home with the cat. Dancing with her cat, she pretends that she is at the ball. Suddenly, Cinderella's fairy godmother appears and takes her to a magical forest where Cinderella watches various creatures dance. At the end of her visit, Cinderella receives a beautiful dress and matching slippers to wear to the ball. She is warned that she only has until midnight to enjoy the party. Cinderella flies away on a magical coach to her destination. Meanwhile, her stepsisters and stepmother arrive at the ball and "show off" their dance skills. Soon after, the Prince arrives at the ball. When Cinderella enters, the two immediately fall in love and spend the evening dancing together. However, when Cinderella sees that the clock is about to strike twelve, she runs off without saying goodbye. One of her slippers falls off while she is escaping, and the Prince and his aide travel the world looking for the young lady whose foot will fit into the shoe. Following the ballet, a short version of "The Story of Cinderella," created with drawings by fifth graders in Montreal, is shown.
("Cinderella" was originally telecast on CBC.)
