Summary
A special program which looks at the first sixty years of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), with salutes to radio and television shows of the past. With a variety of hosts, the program traces the history of NBC through clips and performances. Highlights include the following: a look at the history of westerns on television, with clips of "Bonanza" and "The Virginian"; children's shows are examined with clips of "Howdy Doody" and "Shari Lewis and Lambchop," among others; Dinah Shore leads a tribute to Bob Hope, who has been with NBC for fifty-three years, featuring clips from his radio and television work, including his perennial specials; "special events" programming and the miniseries are highlighted with clips of "Shogun," "Holocaust," and "The Execution of Private Slovik"; a retrospective on NBC sitcoms features clips from "The Goldbergs," "Chico and the Man," "Sanford and Son," and "The Cosby Show"; newsmagazines and news documentaries are feted with highlights of the moon landing, the release of U.S. hostages from Iran, and the Ethiopian famine; a retrospective on sporting events spotlights Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's home run record, Bjorn Borg's fifth straight Wimbledon tennis championship, and O.J. Simpson's historic run during the Rose Bowl; a look at memorable farewells on television includes footage of "Little House on the Prairie," "The Huntley/Brinkley Report," "The Today Show" featuring Barbara Walters, and "The Tonight Show" featuring Jack Paar. Commercials deleted. This program is closed-captioned.
