60 MINUTES {BETTE DAVIS; THE THUNDERBIRDS; PALMER DRUG ABUSE PROGRAM} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. In the first segment, Mike Wallace interviews Bette Davis. A clip from "The Cabin in the Cotton" is shown and then Davis comments on the following topics: the problems she had with director Michael Curtiz; her reputation as a "first-class stubborn mule"; her four marriages; her feelings about morals; her two abortions; the hardest aspects of parenting; her adopted daughter, Margot, who suffers from a brain injury; her vices; her theory about acting; and the dependability of work and people. In addition, Davis's daughter Barbara, adopted son Michael, and long-time friend Joan Blondell give their opinions about the actress. Also included are the following: clips of "Satan Met a Lady" and "All About Eve"; footage of Bette Davis visiting the cemetery where her mother is buried; and photos of Davis taken throughout her lifetime. In the second segment, Harry Reasoner visits with the Thunderbirds (the United States Air Force Demonstration Team). After clips of the team's air show are shown, Reasoner receives a quick training session and then flies in one of the planes. Also, the members of the team are shown critiquing their air show and visiting patients in a hospital. In the third segment, Dan Rather talks with Bob Meehan, the head of P.D.A.P. (Palmer Drug Abuse Program). Rather explains how the program works while footage of meetings are shown. Bob Meehan discuses why he feels he is worth the money he earns helping others, the success level of his program, and the allegations from former counsellors who worked at P.D.A.P. that the program teaches its members that they cannot succeed without the group. These former staff members explain their feelings about P.D.A.P. during this piece. At the end of the program, Andy Rooney discusses the effect of the end of the football season on the male population and Morley Safer reads mail from viewers responding on segments about football injuries, presidential candidate George Bush, and tax evaders. Includes commercials.
