PINA BAUSCH'S BLUEBEARD (TV)

Summary

A presentation of Pina Bausch's experimental work "Bluebeard," choreographed to Bela Bartok's "Duke Bluebeard's Castle." Beatrice Libonati and Jan Minarek are the principal dancers in this plotless, semi- improvisational work, presented on a leaf-strewn stage that is otherwise sparsely decorated. Allowing for some improvisation by the dancers, especially in moments of silence, the choreography consists primarily of sharp, thrusting, and aggressive movements, with occasional lyrical passages, and includes a duet in which a woman collapses on a man sitting on a chair. Intermittent pauses in the music are filled with silence, the sound of movement among the leaves, or dancers' voices. As many as 22 additional dancers join the principals on stage.

As the piece continues, the stage is at times full of movement and at others comparatively still, with only one or two dancers. During a pause in the music, when screaming and laughter are the only sounds heard, more chairs are brought onstage and a theme from an earlier duet is repeated by all the men and women using the chairs. As the dancers leave with the chairs, the two principal dancers, Beatrice Libonati and Jan Minarek, remain onstage and restate earlier material. In a dramatic climax, the music builds in volume as the dancers simultaneously repeat variations on themes presented earlier. (Original airdate currently unknown.)
