ARTISTS AND MODELS, I: MEN AND WILD HORSES, PART 1 (TV)

Summary

Part one of two in the first of three programs that profile an artist, his work, and his creative relationship to his models. Presented as part commentary and part docudrama, this profile of the early 19th-century French painter Theodore Gericault relies heavily on the artist's letters, those of his family and friends, and the research of Charles Clement, the late 19th-century chronicler, to recreate Gericault's life. Scenes of actors playing his acquaintances are interwoven with shots of the artist's paintings and sketches that display his favorite models: men and wild horses. This part covers Gericault's early life and artistic development, his mysterious mistress, and historical events that influenced his works. Continues with T88:0433.
