PLAY FOR LOVE, A: TREATS (TV)

Summary

One in this weekly series of romantic dramas written by well-known playwrights and produced specifically for television. In this installment, Ann must choose between two lovers who are also her co-workers: Patrick, predictable and polite; and Dave, a mercurial, aggressive womanizer. Dave returns from a three-week news assignment in Beirut to discover that Ann has thrown him out of the house and is now living with Patrick. He punches Patrick and demands that he and Ann discuss the division of their assets. The following day, Dave attempts to convince Patrick that Ann belongs to him. The three meet for dinner at Ann's place to clear up the matter in a civilized manner. Ann cites Dave's emotional cruelty, refusal to marry, and numerous lovers as reasons why she ended their relationship. Dave denies the charges and asks Ann to marry him; she refuses. When Patrick ends up taking Dave's side, Ann decides to break up with him because of his predictability and passivity. She also resigns from the news organization where all three of them work. With Patrick gone, Dave visits Ann under the pretext of returning a rug; he explains that he mistreated her only because she allowed him to do so. They eventually reconcile, and Dave moves back in. Patrick, attempting to act irrational and unpredictable in order to win Ann back, confronts Ann about resuming her relationship with Dave. She throws Patrick out, but changes her mind and runs after him, to no avail. Returning to Dave's side, Ann strokes his hair but he violently pushes her hand away. No commercials. (This is a rebroadcast of a program that originally aired on Oct. 27, 1981.)
