SEGOVIA MASTER CLASS IN SPAIN: MIGUEL BARBERA; MICHAEL LORIMER {PART 1 OF 13} (TV)

Summary

The first in this thirteen-part series featuring music lessons by master guitarist Andrés Segovia at the Musica en Compostela musical academy in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The program opens as a procession of students enters the Santiago de Compostela Royal Cathedral singing the "Canto de Ultreia." Academy co-founder Jose Migues Ruiz-Morales then provides information about the history of the town and cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and about the Musica en Compostela annual summer master-class program. Of the 100 students assembled in the cathedral, Segovia selects two individuals for the day's lesson. First, Spanish student Miguel Barbera joins Segovia to play Joaquin Turina's composition "Fandanguillo," and then American student Michael Lorimer plays the Albert Roussel composition "Segovia." In each instance, as the student plays the solo guitar piece, Segovia stops him periodically with specific instructions and demonstrations. Segovia observes each student throughout the entire piece, at times correcting the student and asking him to play a portion again. The program concludes with a list of the composers and compositions that will be included in the thirteen-week television series.
