NEW YORK ILLUSTRATED: CITY IN TROUBLE (TV)

Summary

One in this public affairs series devoted to issues that concern the greater New York area. This program, narrated by Joseph Michaels, profiles the troubled city of Newburgh, New York. Michaels outlines the events in the city's history that have led to its decline in recent years, which include the exodus of affluent citizens from cities to suburbs during the 1950s and 1960s; the growth of slums; and Newburgh's failure to follow through on plans for urban renewal. Interviews with residents and community leaders reveal further problems, such as the high unemployment rate due to businesses moving away, racial tension and integration, and a lack of leadership. Possible solutions considered include City Manager Jim Hauser's plans for urban improvement and the Hudson Valley Freedom Theatre's youth programs, described by artistic director Curt Stewart. Other community leaders who express their views include Philip Ginquitti, president of the Policemen's Benevolent Association; Police Commissioner James Taylor; Human Rights Commission advisers Sol Nemeroff and the Rev. Saul Williams; and Dr. Edwin F. Klotz, superintendant of schools in Newburgh. Commercials deleted.
