NBC'S SATURDAY NIGHT {SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE} {RALPH NADER, GEORGE BENSON} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Hosted by consumer advocate Ralph Nader, this program begins with the cast welcoming Nader to the show and commenting on his comedic ability. Comedy highlights include Gilda Radner in a sketch called "Baba Wawa Talks to Herself," a send-up of television interviewer Barbara Walters; "The Coneheads at Home," a running sketch in which aliens have trouble assimilating in a suburban community; and a sketch about a "rehearsal" of an electrocution at Lubbock State Penitentiary. Nader appears in a sketch as a consumer spokesperson who tries to explain the presence of inflatable party dolls in his living room to a magazine reporter (Garrett Morris); in a dream sequence about a pre-inauguration meeting with President-elect Jimmy Carter; and as the guest in a television panel discussion spoof, "Youth Asks the Questions." Also included are performances by musical guest George Benson, who sings "This Masquerade" and "Gonna Love You More"; a stand-up comedy routine by Andy Kaufman, which includes his Elvis Presley impression; commercial parodies for the Ambassador Training Institute and with Bill Murray as an old man waiting for a phone call; a short film about garbagemen by Gary Weis; and the weekly news satire "Weekend Update," which includes a phone call from absent cast member John Belushi, and Radner as the hearing-impaired correspondent Emily Litella, who delivers an editorial on the advisability of making Puerto Rico a "steak." Includes commercials and promos.
