FORGOTTEN, THE: LIVING DOE {FINAL AIRED EPISODE} (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic crime series about a group of volunteer investigators in Chicago who work to identify anonymous bodies. In this episode, Candace stumbles into Alex's home and collapses in his arms. A day earlier, a man visits the team and asks him to help identify a John Doe – himself. He explains that he has recently awoken from a four-year coma after being severely beaten and now cannot remember anything about himself or his life, thanks to retrograde amnesia. Grace retrieves the police report and explains that John was seen arguing in a liquor-store parking lot with a man with a gold tooth shortly before the attack, though no leads to his identity or past have yet panned out. They visit the liquor store in question, though it does not trigger any useful memories, and Maxine then arranges for John to be interviewed on national television in the hopes that a friend or relative will recognize him. John suddenly panics and bolts into a nearby movie theatre, and he spots the name "Will" etched onto a seat before telling Alex that he "cannot save him."

Rattled by the detour, Alex accompanies John to the TV station and, at the reporter's request, joins him for the interview, though the reporter begins questioning Alex about his work and about Lucy's disappearance, and he hurriedly ends the conversation. Despite this, the tipline receives a flurry of calls about John, and Walter soon determines that he spent a significant amount of time at a guitar store. The store employee, Angela, identifies him as "Eric," a former regular customer, though adds that he was always reluctant to discuss his personal life. Elsewhere, Candace visits Kevin Ratner, who claims to have been John's fraternity brother, though she quickly deduces that he is merely an addict looking to rob her and makes her escape. Alex employs the help of a geneticist and finds that John has a blood relative nearby, though on the way to visit him they are baffled to find that John can inexplicably speak Japanese, prompting Walter to wonder if he is a "burned" spy. The man, Arlen Sullivan, does not know John, though observes that they look similar, and the team discovers that John spent his childhood in several unhappy foster homes.

Arriving at the final foster parents' home, Alex meets a kindly neighbor, Ruth Nakagawa, who also identifies John as "Eric" and explains that she taught him Japanese as a form of bonding. She adds that she spotted him arguing with his younger foster brother Will on the night of the assault, after which Will too went missing. Alex quickly calls Candace and tells her about the lead, and Eric is upset to realize that she now suspects him of wrongdoing and flees. She pursues him, and is grabbed and injected with large dose of heroin, and she just makes it to Alex's home before collapsing. Distressed, Alex tells the others that Eric attacked her and vanished, and he finds Eric back at the movie theatre. Eric apologizes, desperately explaining that he is afraid of finding out that he was actually a dangerous, harmful person in the past. At the hospital, Candace awakens and reveals that Eric was not her attacker at all and guesses that Kevin is to blame, but Grace explains that he has been locked up. Alex, Eric and Walter then encounter the gold-toothed man outside the theatre, and the encounter finally forces Eric to remember that the man had recruited Will to assist with a robbery and viciously beat him, Eric, when he tried to intervene and "save" his little brother from a dangerous fate. The man is soon arrested, and Eric is overjoyed when Will tracks him down and assures him that he did indeed save him after all. Back at home, Alex catches Candace looking through Lucy's old belongings, and as he concludes that "memories are a gift" that should not be locked away, the two finally share a kiss. Includes commercials and promos.

(This was the final chronological episode, though not the intended series finale.)
