DICK CAVETT SHOW, THE {ORSON WELLES} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs, hosted by Dick Cavett, featuring interviews with newsmakers and people in the political and cultural forefront. On this program, Orson Welles is the only guest. After Cavett's brief spoken introduction and a clip from Welles's movie "The Lady from Shanghai," Welles expresses his distaste for film clips and for the soundtrack of the clip just shown. Welles reminisces about Hollywood mogul Harry Cohn, calling him a "monster" but recalling his generosity as well. Occasionally turning the tables on Cavett, interviewing him on his background and on rival talk-show hosts, Welles devotes much of the program to accounts of his past exploits, including brushes with the famous or infamous and youthful travel.

Welles discusses his upcoming movie also featuring Tuesday Weld and performs a monologue based on the biblical story of Noah. Other topics include Welles's complaint that Buck Henry has misquoted him, his experiences working with Mike Nichols, tales of his World War II adventures, and his opinion of pornographic films. Includes commercials. (Tape is blank for seventy-five seconds following the "Smothers Brothers" spot.)

(Cavett hosted several talk shows under the title, "The Dick Cavett Show," which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1972, on PBS from 1977 to 1982, on the USA network from 1985 to 1986, and on CNBC from 1989 to 1995. During 1973 to 1975, the series aired irregularly as part of "ABC's Wide World of Entertainment." Other versions of "The Dick Cavett Show" include a variety show on CBS in 1975 and a talk show on ABC in 1986.)
