PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MEDIA AS ENTERTAINMENT: MOONLIGHT AND VAMPIRES: NEVER OUT OF DATE {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars conducted by The Paley Center for Media which celebrate media as entertainment. Held at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, and moderated by Kristin Dos Santos, E! Entertainment reporter, this seminar celebrates "Moonlight," a supernatural drama about an eighty-five-year-old vampire in present-day Los Angeles who, appearing to be thirty, uses his waking hours to work as a private investigator. Barbara Dixon, director of The Paley Center in Los Angeles, offers opening comments before bringing Dos Santos to the stage.

After telling about the show's background, Dos Santos introduces the panelists: executive producers Harry Werksman, Gabrielle Stanton, and Joel Silver; and cast members Brian J. White (Carl Davis); Jason Dohring (Josef Konstantin); Eric Winter (Benjamin Talbot); Sophia Myles (Beth Turner); and Alex O'Loughlin (Mick St. John). Cast member Shannyn Sossamon (Coraline Duvall) was scheduled to appear but was unable to attend.

Panelists touch on such topics as: the efforts by ardent fans to save the show and secure a second season; when producers realized that the show had "struck a nerve" with audiences; the element of the program which convinced CBS that the show would be a hit; why all the major actors but O'Loughlin were recast before the pilot was taped; how O'Loughlin's Australian origins and Myles's British origins made them "instant mates" on set; the ways in which producers made the show evolve to "get the right vibe"; the appeal of stories with unrequited love; future plot developments; and clues which have been inserted in scripts regarding potential storylines.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: why the show hasn't been more heavily publicized; if cast members were initially put off by the prospect of another vampire story; actors' favorite scenes from the show; the measures taken to achieve the program's unique look; and why O'Loughlin feels unusually protective of the series.

Finally, Silver introduces the "Moonlight" episode "Fated to Pretend," which is screened in its entirety. (For episode synopsis and credits, see: "Moonlight: Fated to Pretend," ACCNUM 100666.)
