SIXTY-SIXTH ANNUAL ALL-STAR GAME {THE 66TH ANNUAL ALL-STAR GAME} 1995 (TV)

Summary

This sports program showcases the best major league baseball players in the Sixty-Sixth Annual All-Star Game, hosted by The Ballpark in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers. Most of the attention is focused on the pitching match-up of rookie sensation Hideo Nomo of the Los Angeles Dodgers against the fireballer Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners. At the start of the game, the temperature is almost one hundred degrees on the field. Highlights, among others, include: the coaching staffs, trainers, and both teams are introduced; country singer, Michelle Wright, sings the Canadian National Anthem and singer Lyle Lovett performs "The Star Spangled Banner"; baseball's all-time strike out leader Nolan Ryan throws out the ceremonial first pitch; a look back at the game in 1993, when Johnson was pitching to John Kruk, who was lucky to walk out of the batter's box with just a strike out; Philadelphia Phillie outfielder, Lenny Dykstra, gets thrown out trying to steal second base in the first inning; Cleveland Indian outfielder, Kenny Lofton, just misses hitting a home run off Nomo in the first inning; John Saunders talks with Ken Griffey, Jr., of the Mariners about how his broken wrist is feeling and when he expects to return to action; Kevin Appier, of the Kansas City Royals, relieves Johnson in the third inning; and John Smiley, of the Cincinatti Reds, does the same for Nomo; Lesley Visser interviews Nomo on the success he's having in his rookie season and having a good outing during the all-star game; in the bottom of the fourth inning, Chicago White Sox first baseman, Frank Thomas, crushes a two-run homer into the seats in left field; after the fifth inning, the American League is leading two to nothing; Houston Astro second baseman, Craig Biggio, turns on a pitch in the sixth inning and the ball also ends up in the left field seats; Biggio's home run makes the score two to one in favor of the American League.

Further highlights include: Los Angeles Dodger catcher Mike Piazza hits a solo home run off hometown pitcher Kenny Rogers in the seventh inning to tie the game at two all; in the bottom of the seventh, the flamboyant and talented Montreal Expo pitcher Carlos Perez takes the mound but is pulled after giving up a few hits; at the start of the eighth inning, Florida Marlin utility player Jeff Conine hits a home run which pulls the National League ahead by one run; as the innings go by, the managers begin to make changes in the field and on the mound; going into the ninth inning, the National League is still leading by one run with Chicago Cubs closer Randy Myers on the mound; the last out of the game comes with a man on first and a long fly ball to right field; the National League holds on to win three to two; the three runs all came off home runs; and at the conclusion of the game, the Most Valuable Player Award is presented to Conine, the winning pitcher is Heathcliff Slocumb of the Philadelphia Phillies, and the losing pitcher is Steve Ontiveros of the Oakland Athletics. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.
