HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: AN AMERICAN STORY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramatic specials presented by Hallmark. In this drama, a group of World War II GIs return home to their Texas town to find that another kind of battle must be waged against a corrupt mayor and his political machine. Upon returning from war, the veterans' close friendships are challenged by the renewed significance of the differences in their social positions. George, an esteemed lawyer, is offered a spot on Mayor Cantrell's re-election ticket and must decide whether to compromise his ideals for ambition or join his friends in a "Veteran's Party" campaign against Cantrell. Meanwhile, Jesse, who suffered a head injury in the war, finds that his wife has been running their factory more successfully than he ever did in the past. This, the effects of his injury, and Jesse's disastrous run for mayor on the newly created Veteran's Party platform lead to marital problems and a possible tragedy. Juan returns home to his father and his fiancŽe, Maria, with ambition and an altered world view, but finds his aspirations threatened by ugly provincial prejudice against Mexicans. Joining the veterans in the fight against corruption is Hope Tyler, a war widow who shakes George out of his complacency. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
