CANDID CAMERA {PREMIERE ON NBC} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs hosted by Allen Funt, in which a hidden -- hence "candid" -- camera films practical jokes played on unsuspecting people. In this episode, Funt first introduces a gag which involves the excuses three women make as they attempt to return separate items at S. Klein's department store in Union Square, and Funt, pretending to be a refund clerk, gives them a hard time; next, Funt introduces surprise celebrities in the studio audience, including John Garfield, Margo, Charles Korvin, Norman Corwin, his wife Katharine Locke, and Ruth Donnelly; Funt then explains how they hide their cameras, which leads into a gag about a phony camera crew waiting outside an apartment building for a big movie star to emerge; he then introduces the victim of this prank; Funt next has fun with five-year-old kids who offer their advice on how we could stop the next war before it starts; and, in the last prank, Funt, pretending to find a pocketbook on the street with $17,000 inside and no identification, asks an honest eighty-six-year-old woman what he should do. No commercials. (Network affiliation varies. "Candid Camera" was telecast on ABC in 1948 as "Candid Microphone"; on NBC in 1949; on CBS from 1949 to 1950; on ABC from 1951 to 1952; on NBC in 1953; and on CBS from1960 to 1967. The series later was syndicated.)
