CBS NEWS CAMPAIGN '64: NIXON PRESS CONFERENCE (TV)

Summary

Coverage of a press conference by former Vice President Richard M. Nixon, in San Francisco for the 1964 Republican National Convention. He is accompanied by hotel magnate Conrad Hilton, aide H.R. "Bob" Haldeman, staff member Sherman Unger, former Press Secretary Herbert Klein, and others. Nixon says he will endorse the nominee of the convention but that Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) could beat President Lyndon B. Johnson. He defends Goldwater's foreign policy and acknowledges Goldwater's stand on civil rights has alienated black voters. He admits that Goldwater is not consistent with the party on the issues of right-to-work legislation, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the United Nations, recognition of Soviet Union, and civil rights, but says platform will reflect mainstream party thinking. Harry Reasoner summarizes the news conference.
