IMUS IN THE MORNING: WFAN COVERAGE OF THE 9/11/01 TERRORIST ATTACKS {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (RADIO)

Summary

This tape presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on WFAN-AM's "Imus in the Morning" program, hosted by Don Imus. This tape opens in the middle of a commercial block, after which Imus conducts an interview with William J. Bratton, who served as the New York City police commissioner from 1994 to 1996 and now heads the consulting firm the Bratton Group. The two discuss the day's New York mayoral primary election, and Bratton says that he is endorsing Mark Green for mayor. Imus states, "There's no bigger phony than [candidate Michael] Bloomberg, but [candidate Fernando] Ferrer's a close second." Imus then commends Bratton for his history with the police, saying that he has no idea where people find the courage to be a firefighter or police officer. After Bratton leaves, Imus engages in some playful banter with his sidekick, reporter Charles McCord, about people who have parties in parking lots before sporting events. "Tailgaters are losers," Imus says, then adds, "Anyone who sits down and watches a whole football game is a loser." In the middle of the next commercial break, Imus breaks in to say that he has received word that "something hit the World Trade Center." Imus then lets the audio from an MSNBC feed play over the air as he tries to figure out what is happening. After a bit, he breaks back in and declares, "Now the other tower blew up." He pauses and adds, "People are starting to say this might be some kind of terrorist attack." Includes commercials.

(Station and series run vary; this series also aired on WNBC in New York City from 1971 to 1987.)

Cataloging of this program was made possible by Ralph Guild, 2002.
