Summary

This program features live coverage, from Royals Stadium in Kansas City, of the sixth game of the 1985 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals. Al Michaels calls the action, with commentary and analysis from Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver. Pre-game highlights include the following: Michaels interviews Cardinal pitcher Todd Worrell; Reggie Jackson assesses the mood of both teams; Glen Campbell sings the national anthem; Royals hurler Charlie Leibrandt speaks about disappointment; and astronaut Sally Ride throws out the first ball. Game highlights include the following: Royals starter Charlie Leibrandt pitches a perfect game through five innings, while Cardinals hurler Danny Cox matches him with six scoreless frames of his own. In the top of the eighth, Brian Harper singles in Terry Pendleton to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead; Dan Quisenberry relieves Royals starter Charlie Leibrandt with the bases loaded, and gets Willie McGee to ground out to end the threat; in the bottom of the ninth, Todd Worrell comes in to pitch for the Cardinals; umpire Don Denkinger's farcically inept call allows pinch hitter Jorge Orta to reach first with a "single"; Steve Balboni singles Orta to second; following a force out, a passed ball advances the runners to second and third; Hal McRae is intentionally walked; and Dane Iorg's pinch single drives in Onyx Concepcion and Jim Sundberg to give the Royals a 2-1 victory, evening the series at three games apiece. In post-game coverage, Reggie Jackson interviews Iorg, Leibrandt, and Royals manager Dick Howser. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
