YES, YES, NANETTE {WESTINGHOUSE PLAYHOUSE / THE NANETTE FABRAY SHOW}: FOR RICHER OR POORER (TV)

Summary

One in this short-lived comedy series about a Broadway actress who marries a widower, inheriting his wacky household and two rambunctious children. In this episode, Dan returns home and complains bitterly about his latest fight with his producer, Bert Stanley, declaring that he will not write a script in which he does not believe. Nan firmly supports his principles, though she is taken aback to learn that, because of his strict contract, Dan's suspension prevents him from writing for any other studio, meaning that he will be out of work entirely for over a year. Nan vows to "tighten their belt" and informs the kids that they will be cutting back on all unnecessary frivolities, though elsewhere, Dan assures Sid that the spat with Bert will resolve itself within a few days, as it always does.

At home, Nan busies herself making some tough sacrifices, cutting out the services of housekeeper Mrs. Harper, milkman Clyde, the gardener and various others. Dan returns home to a very spare dinner and informs the family that they are far from destitute, though Nan and the children assume that he is merely putting on a brave face for their sake. Bert soon telephones Dan, but Nan takes it upon herself to assure him that Dan is "absolutely through" with their partnership. Bert later stops by for a visit, seeking a resolution, but Nan's furious demeanor prompts him to reaffirm that Dan is "washed up" for good. Dan finally explains to Nan that he and Bert usually work through their blow-ups in a harmless fashion, and Nan frets that she has truly ruined her husband's career. Bert returns for a private conversation with Dan, however, and pleads with him to return, swearing that he is the only writer who understands his visions. Dan quickly agrees, though Nan again barges in and tries to reason with him, not realizing that they have already smoothed things over. Later, Dan is overjoyed when Mrs. Harper returns to the household. Commercials deleted.
