METROPOLITAN OPERA BROADCASTS: LA FILLE DU
REGIMENT, TAPE 1 OF 3 {ACT I} (RADIO)

Summary

Part one of three. One in this series of performances by the Metropolitan Opera. In this program, the Metropolitan Opera performs Donizetti's "La Fille du Regiment," in French. In Act I, Tonio, a peasant, is caught sneaking around the grenadiers camp during a battle, but is pardoned when Marie, the foundling brought up with the regiment, tells them that he rescued her from falling off a precipice. Tonio decides to enlist so that the grenadiers will permit him the honor of marrying Marie. To celebrate his acceptance, Marie sings the regimental song, "Chacun le sait, chacun le dit le regiment par excellence...." However, it is discovered that the Marquise de Berkenfield, who came to the camp by chance, is actually Marie's aunt. The Marquise insists on taking her away to assume her rightful station in life, and sadly, she parts from Tonio, who vows to follow her. Sponsored by Texaco. Continues with R:3149.
