ST. ELSEWHERE: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (TV)

Summary

One in this medical drama series set in St. Eligius hospital in Boston. In this episode, Westphall learns that only two of his outreach programs were approved, and Craig decides to personally escort Yvonne to Clinton. Morrison updates Westphall on Colonel Cochrane's recovery and learns that Captain Gloria Neal is coming to check on him, and Dr. Weiss visits John Doe #6 in the psych ward and orders him to stop watching the news, as it is only contributing to his depression over not knowing his own identity. Craig resolves to get Barbara back from the Galeckis despite Steven's "airtight" will, and Chandler and Turner attempt to plan their vacation as Ehrlich seeks Wade's counsel, concerned that Caldwell has talked Mr. Boyden into an unnecessary cosmetic surgery just to boost his own career. John Doe "realizes" that he is in fact Mary Richards of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and Yvonne seemingly awakens for a fleeting moment. Cochrane tells Neal that "Christ is his physician" and describes his newfound sense of faith about his destiny, and Ehrlich convinces Boyden to reconsider the eye lift at least for the time being, as it is a permanent change to his appearance.

Weiss encourages the other doctors to play along with John Doe's delusion for the time being, and Westphall observes that Neal is merely acting as an "escort service" and is trying to get Cochrane back to Bethesda in a hurry. Chandler marvels at the "secrets" of human reproduction as Turner prepares to implant Terri Valere with the embryos, and in Clinton, when Yvonne again shows signs of consciousness, Craig tells her parents that she could potentially make a full recovery. Cochrane tells Neal that God has instructed him to stay at St. Eligius despite the threat of a court martial, and Morrison agrees to delay his official discharge. Caldwell angrily confronts Ehrlich about meddling with Boyden's surgery plans, and Turner jokes with Terri about her future baby's name as she performs the procedure. At "Mary's" party, "Rhoda," also known as Carlin, exasperatedly attempts to break John Doe's delusion, but he remains convinced of his identity and is thrilled to spot "Sue Ann" in the hall. Craig shares an awkward dinner with Gene and tells him that Steven named them Barbara's guardians as a final personal insult to his father, and when a fight breaks out at the party, John Doe realizes that they have been "cancelled" and that he is not really Mary.

Neal tells Westphall that Cochrane is a "born-again mess" who cannot return to space, though he accuses her of caring only about PR for the space program and neglecting her true duties as a doctor. Barbara's two grandfathers share a rare kind moment as they care for her late at night, and Craig is struck by the other's man honorable nature as Gene explains that he sacrificed the home built by his father to send his own children to college. Having decided upon Barbados, Chandler relaxes with Turner and ponders the experience of having children, still thinking about the Valeres' journey to parenthood. Ellen is furious to see that Craig has had a change of heart and left Barbara with the Galeckis after all, and Auschlander talks with John Doe, who is sure that he will find his real identity one day and will, in fact, "make it after all."
