Summary
One in this series of educational programs focusing on the visual and performing arts. Hosted by unorthodox magicians Penn & Teller each episode features a guest artist. In this episode, Allen Toussaint helps Penn & Teller to explain what a melody is and how it becomes a musical composition. With the help of three children, Toussaint writes a melody and uses it to create a song. He is then shown recording the finished product with studio musicians. Other highlights in this program include the following: Penn & Teller use magic to explain repetition and variation in musical compostions; animation segments demonstrate what a melody is; the hosts use some of their own musical inventions to explain rests, rhythms, and different melodies; and Bobby McFerrin and Jane Ira Bloom demonstrate musical improvisation.
