ABC SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIE: DON'T DRINK THE WATER (TV)

Summary

One in this series of movies presented by ABC. This is the first movie Woody Allen has made for television, serving as director, writer, and star of this adaption of his 1966 Broadway farce about the Cold War. While visiting the Soviet Union in the early 1960s, an American couple, Walter and Marion Hollander, and their daughter, Susan, are forced to seek asylum at an American Embassy when they are mistaken for spies. Unfortunately, the American Ambassador is in Washington on business, leaving his inept son, Axel, in charge. Also at the Embassy is a priest, Father Drobner, who has been unable to leave the building for six years. When a promised exchange of prisoners falls through and rumors emerge that the Soviet police plan to have the Hollanders kidnapped, Father Drobner, Axel, and Susan realize that the only way the Hollanders will ever return to the United States is for the family to attempt a daring escape, but it takes a little persuasion to convince Susan's paranoid father. At the same time, an Emir is visiting the Embassy along with his harem of fourteen wives, and Axel finds that he is falling in love with Susan. Includes commercials, promos, a public service announcement, and an ABC News Brief. This program is closed-captioned.
