FRANK SINATRA PROGRAM, THE {JUDY GARLAND} (RADIO)
Summary
One in this series of musical programs with a bit of
comic relief starring Frank Sinatra. In this
installment the singer welcomes a guest he predicts
servicemen overseas will be glad to hear,
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer actress and singing star Judy
Garland. Sinatra tells comic Jerry Lester that he is
working on a film at MGM himself, "Anchors Aweigh," and
Lester reveals his own aspirations to film stardom,
averring that he can "out act" just about any of the
movie studio's stars. Sinatra suggests that they ask
Garland to help the comic find a job in pictures. In
the break that follows, sponsor Vimms Vitamins offers a
public service announcement on behalf of the War
Manpower Commission. Announcer Truman Bradley urges
American women to go to work in order to free up men to
fight overseas. Next, Sinatra sings "Then You Kissed
Me," and he and Lester pay a visit to Garland in her
dressing room at MGM. There the actress boasts to them
that she has producer Joe Pasternak under her thumb.
When Pasternak shows up at her door, however, she turns
subservient, and she advises Sinatra to be sure to run
errands for George Sidney, the director of his upcoming
picture. She then sings "Zing! Went the Strings of My
Heart." After the song, Lester attempts to woo Garland
with a French accent, but she suggests that he does not
meet her standards as a leading man. When Walter
Pidgeon takes a girl in his arms, explains Garland, "he
just oozes charm." "What about me?" counters Lester.
"You just ooze," he is informed. Although she is
unwilling to find Lester a job, she takes him and
Sinatra on a brief tour of the studio, and Garland and
Sinatra pause outside a soundstage to sing "Embraceable
you." Includes a commercial, a promo, and public
service announcements.
