The Paley Center for Media is celebrates the centennial of great American lyricist and songwriter Johnny Mercer with a live event on December 2, 2009, and this screening series featuring Mercer's rare appearances on various television programs as well as clips of celebrities (Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, and Bette Midler to name a few) singing his songs. Johnny Mercer on Television This Paley Center–created compilation celebrates the centennial of one of America’s foremost songwriters, Johnny Mercer. Included is a segment from The Merv Griffin Show featuring Mercer himself along with Tony Bennett, Fred Astaire, Rosemary Clooney, and Pearl Bailey; a Person to Person interview; performances by Frank Sinatra (“Day In, Day Out”), Judy Garland (“On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe”), Barbra Streisand (“Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home”), and Peggy Lee (“When the World Was Young”); and a rare U.K. concert with Mercer singing his own songs, first televised in 1974.
