ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {TOY FIXER; SKIPJACKS; JERRY'S PLACE; BILLY JONES; CHARLESTON, SC} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the back roads of America. Kuralt begins this program with a profile of George Wilcox, a retired sheep rancher who fixes toys. His pet project is to repair old, broken toys throughout the year so that as many children as possible in the region of California where he lives will have gifts for Christmas. Next, Kuralt takes a ride with Clifton Webster on a skipjack, a broad-beamed, cross-planked, flat-bottomed boat used for oyster fishing in Maryland. These nineteenth-century vessels, of which there are only about forty remaining, are the last working sailboats in the United States. The next segment is a visit to Jerry's Place, a deli in Chicago, where owner Jerry Meyers, insults, abuses, crushes, and manhandles his customers in an effort to serve them all within three minutes. In the program's fourth segment, Kuralt investigates the legend of Billy Jones, a famous railroad man from Los Gatos, California, who gave rides to the town's children on a narrow gauge railroad he built on his ranch. Following his death, the townspeople rebuilt the railroad in the town park as a tribute to Jones. The program closes with a visit to Charleston, South Carolina. Kuralt focuses on the city's survival after centuries of Indian and pirate attacks, the Civil War, hurricanes, floods, fires, epidemics, earthquakes, and tornados.

("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970s the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. In addition, the series was reworked for and aired on The Travel Channel in 1993.)

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the CBS Foundation, 1998.
