ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {CHANDLER FAMILY REUNION; WISCONSIN; LIBERATOR OF BULGARIA; SIDEWINDER} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. The program begins in Mississippi at the Chandler family reunion and fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration where the family also celebrates the good fortune of the nine Chandler children who have come a long way from their origins as sharecroppers. In Wisconsin, Kuralt provides information about the radical politician "Fighting Bob" Robert LaFollete who ushered in an era of progressive governmental reform in his state and throughout the U.S. The next clip tells the story of an Ohio native, Januarius MacGahan, who through his career as a foreign correspondent became known as the "Liberator of Bulgaria." The program ends in North Carolina, as Kuralt witnesses the last trip of the unique steam engine, originally used for mountain logging, called The Sidewinder.

("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970s the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. This program represents one of a series that was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)
