ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {MASSACHUSETTS; HIGHWAY BUILDER; ICE SCULPTOR; PRAYING NUNS; AQUA BELLES} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. In the first segment, Kuralt travels to Boston, Massachusetts, where he remembers the people and principles that are considered the foundation of the country. He visits the graves of James Otis, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere, in addition to sites such as the Boston Commons, while quoting famous phrases, songs, and poems that reflect the Revolutionary spirit. Next, Kuralt spends some time with Gordon Bushnell, a seventy-nine-year-old retired dairy farmer who is working on a solo project to build a road across Minnesota. Over the twenty years that he has been working on the project, he has completed nine miles; and he says that the project keeps him going and provides him with a feeling of accomplishment. In Itasca, Illinois, one lone man creates beautiful sculptures to enhance a fancy hotel brunch. However, since all his work is sculpted out of ice, it will vanish within five hours. Next, the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, have literally been praying non-stop since 1878. The nuns work in shifts, two at a time, with their prayers beginning in their chapel and reaching all around the globe. Finally in Green Valley, Arizona, a group of retired women, who call themselves the Aqua Belles, practice their elaborate synchronized swimming routines for an annual show. Includes commercials.
