ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {SOUTH CAROLINA GINGER ALE; GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE; NORTH CAROLINA BIKES} (TV)

Summary

The first in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. Kuralt begins his travels at the Blenheim Ginger Ale Bottling Company in Marlboro, South Carolina. Both Blenheim and Canada Dry started making their ginger ale in 1904, but Blenheim's extra spicy flavor appeals only to certain palates. Next, Kuralt interviews three men who were on the construction team that built the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco, California. The men remember the dangerous work and hard times vividly, but they take pride in having built something so great. Finally, in Belmont, North Carolina, Jethro Mann spends his extra time and money running an unofficial bicycle "lending library" out of his garage, for the children in his community whose families can not afford bicycles. With some help from Mann, children learn about values such as responsibility, cooperation, and politeness when they "check out" bikes. Includes commercials.

("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970s the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. This program represents one of a series that was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the CBS Foundation, 1998.
