ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {NORTH WOODS GUIDE; TOMBSTONES; STEAM CALLIOPE; HUCK FINN; UTAH} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. In the first segment, Kuralt visits Bill McGee, a self-appointed guide in the North Woods of Minnesota, who has devoted his life to the northern wilderness and has many wild tales to tell. Next is a survey of graveyards throughout the country in which Kuralt looks at the inscriptions on old tombstones as a way to understand American culture. In Ohio at local fairs and festivals, Clovis Watkins proudly displays the steam calliope that he spent three years building. Next, Kuralt reads an excerpt from Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," accompanied by scenes of the Mississippi River; he goes on to explain what makes Twain the voice of -- and the character Huck Finn a symbol of -- America. The final segment presents a brief history of the Mormons' struggles to establish a homeland, and Brigham Young's role in settling Salt Lake City, Utah. Commercials deleted.
